Blankness Is Not Reality
Spanda Karika 1.13

Therefore that state is to be known as contrived, like the state of deep sleep, always. Reality is not reached in this way, by being merely remembered.
Three words carry this teaching. Kritrima means artificial, from kri, to make: something produced by effort. Sausupta means of deep sleep, from sushupti, the sleep in which nothing appears. Smaryamanatva means the condition of being only remembered, from smri, to recall. The text's word for reality is tattva, literally that-ness. The Spanda Karikas say that the blank, sleep-like state, where everything has been pushed out of awareness, is contrived. It is like deep sleep, where nothing is known. Then comes the second clause: reality is not reached by being something merely remembered. If the true self were only a past event you recall, it would be one more object in the mind, now gone. This follows the previous verse, which spoke of effort and of certainty that something was present. The question behind it is whether emptiness is the goal. The answer is no. The commentators read it as a caution against taking a made-up stillness for the Self that stays awake through waking, dream and sleep alike. The teaching asks the listener to tell a state produced by effort from the awareness that is already here, and not to treat a memory of calm as the thing itself.
On a bright afternoon you draw every curtain and the room goes dark, like night. It looks like night, but your hand did it, and the sun is still out there. Blankness produced by effort is the drawn curtain. Reality is the daylight, which was never lost.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes with your eyes closed. Notice whether you are trying to go dull or empty. 2. Open your eyes and rest them on one ordinary object, such as a cup. Notice that you are aware right now, with nothing to recall. 3. Tomorrow, when you catch yourself thinking "I felt so clear yesterday," notice that this is a memory. Turn to what is awake in you at that moment.
A man steps off the train at dawn, home from ten days of silence. On day nine he felt a quiet he now wants back. He stands on the platform trying to produce it, and he grows irritated because it will not come. Here the verse changes three things. He sees that he is chasing a memory, and a memory is not the thing remembered. He sees that his squeezing is making a flat, tight blankness, a copy of that quiet. Then he notices the chai stall, the cold air, and the one who is aware of both, which needs no recalling. Ordinary experience bears out that forcing a calm usually brings strain or dullness. The verse does not promise that the day-nine quiet returns, and it does not make every flat or numb feeling spiritual. Numbness or low mood that lasts for weeks is a matter for a doctor.
