The Doer Remains
Spanda Karika 1.14
Meaning · English
Two states are named here: the thing to be done, and the doing self. What is to be done wears away. The doer does not. Only the effort that leans toward some outcome is lost, and nothing more. When that effort is lost, the unwise man concludes, "I am lost."
Three key words carry the teaching. Karya means the thing to be done, the outcome, from kri, to do. Kartritva means being the doer, the one who acts, from the same root. Prayatna means effort, the straining toward something. The Spanda Karikas say that two states are spoken of here: karya, the state of having a task, and kartritva, the state of being the doer. The first wears away. A task is finished, or dropped, or fails, and then it is gone. The second does not wear away, because the doer is the knowing self, and it is there whether or not anything is being done. The only thing that goes missing is the effort that leans forward toward an outcome. When that effort lapses, a person who has not understood this concludes, "I am finished." He has mistaken the loss of a project for the loss of himself. The teaching is given at this point because the verses before it speak of the self that remains through waking, dream and sleep, and a reader needs to know that the going of effort does not threaten it. The listener is asked to notice the difference between what is lost and who loses it.
A potter finishes a bowl and the bowl is carried off to market. His hands are empty, but he is not gone. Each finished bowl, and the strain of making it, passes. The potter who made it stays. The bowl maps to the task and its outcome. The potter maps to the doer.
1. Today, when a task ends or fails, such as a finished meal, a cancelled plan or an email that went nowhere, stop for one breath. 2. Say quietly: "That task is over. I am still here." 3. Notice what is still present: the one who saw the task end. 4. Do this three times this week, with small things first.
A man retires from forty years at the same factory. On his first Monday there is no shift, no list, no one waiting for him. He sits at the kitchen table and a thought arrives: if I am not doing anything, what am I? The verse speaks to exactly this moment. First, it separates two things that had been fused: the work, which has ended, and the one who did it, who is sitting there noticing the quiet. Second, it says that the emptiness he feels is the loss of straining toward results, and that this is different from losing himself. Third, it leaves him free to ask what the doer is, without panic. Ordinary experience confirms that people often feel hollow when a role ends, and that the feeling eases as other ways of being useful and known take shape. The text does not promise that the grief of a finished chapter disappears. Nor does it replace care from a doctor or counsellor if the low mood deepens and does not lift.
