The Awareness Never Lost
Spanda Karika 1.16
Meaning · English
But the inward-turned state, the seat of all-knowing, can never be lost at any time, because apart from it nothing else is ever found.
Three words carry the verse. Antarmukha means inward-turned: antar is within, mukha is face, so awareness with its face toward itself. Sarvajnatva means all-knowingness, the quality of being the one in whom every knowing happens. Lopa means loss, from lup, to cut off or break away. The verse says the inward-turned state is the seat of that all-knowing, and it can never be cut off. The reason given is anupalambhana, nothing else being found. Every thing you find, a pain, a plan, a face, is found by this awareness. Nothing exists to find it missing, so it cannot go missing. The verse follows 1.14, which said that only the effortful reaching toward a task is lost. The knower behind the reaching stays. The verse answers the fear that when a doing stops, the self stops too. The Spanda Karikas teach that what ends is the activity, never the one who knows it. For the listener, this asks only for recognition: when a role, a task or a mood ends, notice that something is still aware of the ending. The commentators read this as the ground under waking, dream and sleep.
A lamp is carried through a dark house. Rooms light up and go dark again as it passes, and nobody thinks the light was lost when the kitchen went dark. The rooms are our tasks and moods, appearing and fading. The lamp is the awareness that shows each one and is never itself missing.
1. Tonight, when you finish one ordinary task, such as washing the last dish or closing a book, stop for ten seconds before starting anything else. 2. In that gap, notice that the task is over but you are still aware: of the room, of your breath, of the quiet. 3. Ask once, quietly, who is noticing that the task has ended. 4. Do this once a day for a week and note whether the gap feels less empty.
A retired schoolteacher wakes on his first morning without the bell. No class waits, no register, no one calls him sir. He feels as if he has been switched off. Hearing the kettle, seeing the light on the wall, he notices he is still here, noticing. The verse speaks to that moment. First, the busy part of him, the one who marks and plans and answers, has gone quiet. Second, the one who knows that quiet has not gone anywhere. Third, the fear of being no one eases a little, because the text teaches that what knows is not what was lost. Ordinary experience agrees that when a role ends, the sense of being the one who notices carries on. The verse does not remove the grief of leaving work he loved, or the loneliness of empty hours. It is no replacement for a doctor when low mood or confusion sets in after a big change. It speaks of what stays, not of what is missed.
