One Knower Through Three States
Spanda Karika 1.17
Meaning · English
For the one fully awake, perceiving goes on constantly and does not fail through the three states. For the other, it comes only at the start and the end of them.
Three words carry it. Upalabdhi is perceiving, from upa-labh, to get hold of: the plain fact of knowing that something is there. Tripada means the three steps, the states of waking, dream and deep sleep. Suprabuddha is su, well, and prabuddha, awakened: one thoroughly awake. The Spanda Karikas teach that for such a person the perceiving never drops out. Waking, dreaming and sleeping come and go, and the knower is present in each. The last clause turns to the other kind of person, whose awareness appears only at the beginning and the end of the states. The commentators take these as the edges, the instant of passing from one state to the next, when the old scene has gone and the new has not yet set hard. The question behind it comes from the previous verse, which said the inward-turned person never loses the knower. If that holds, how does an awakened person differ from everyone else? The answer is continuity. Everyone has the knower, but only some stay in touch with it through all three states. The text asks the listener to look at the edges, where the knower already shows itself.
Picture a house of three rooms with a dark passage between each. One person walks through carrying a lit lamp and sees every room. Another carries none and sees only the thin light spilling under each door as it opens or closes. The lamp is the knower. The person with the lamp is awake; the other sees it only at the thresholds.
1. Tonight, as you lie down, watch for the last moment you notice before sleep takes over. Do this for a few minutes, without forcing anything. 2. Tomorrow, before you open your eyes or reach for your phone, stay still for ten slow breaths. Notice the instant you realise you are awake. 3. Once during the day, when you switch from one task to another, pause for one breath at the gap. Notice who is aware of the change.
A man dozes in a hospital waiting chair while his wife is in surgery. A nurse touches his shoulder. For a second he does not know where he is or why his chest is tight. Then the day returns, all at once. In that gap, before the worry arrived, there was only plain knowing. The Spanda Karikas teach that this knowing is the same one present in waking, dream and sleep, and that the awakened person does not lose it when the scene changes. For the rest, it shows at the edges, as it did in that chair. The verse changes the moment in small steps. He can stay in the gap a breath longer. He can see the worry arrive as something that came after the knowing. Then he can stand up from that steadier place. Ordinary experience bears out that the edges of sleep feel different from full waking. The verse does not promise that the waiting will be easy, that the surgery will go well, or that the fear will not return.
