Shining in Two Places

Meaning · English

Joined to his supreme power, whose form is both knowing and the known, the all-pervading lord shines in two states. Apart from these two, in the other, he is consciousness alone.

Three words carry it. Vibhu means the all-pervading one, from vi and bhu, to be everywhere. Here it names the lord, the one consciousness the Spanda Karikas teach. Shakti is his power, the capacity to act and to show. Cinmaya means made of consciousness: nothing in it but awareness itself. The Karikas say the lord is never apart from his supreme power, and that power takes the form of knowing and of the known. So in two states he shines as both sides of experience at once: someone who knows, and things that are known. Waking and dream are the usual reading, since in both there is an I and there are objects. In the remaining state the pairing falls away and what is left is consciousness, plain and whole. The commentators read it this way, and Kshemaraja's Spanda-nirnaya takes the supreme power as the lord's own freedom, never a second thing beside him. It is taught here because the verses around it speak of one awareness running through every state. A reader could ask what that awareness is made of in each. The answer is that it is the same lord all along. Where the world appears, he appears as the world's knower and its objects. Where it does not, he remains. The listener is asked to see that both sides of experience are his power, not a separate fact.

A single lamp stands on a stage. During the play its light falls on actors and on the audience, so there are watchers and things watched. After the theatre empties, the lamp still burns on bare boards. The light is one thing, shown first as the whole scene and then as itself alone.

1. Tonight, in the first few seconds after you wake, stay still before reaching for your phone or the clock. 2. Notice that you are aware before you have named the room, the hour or yourself. 3. Then let the usual order return: the room, the day, your name. Watch it assemble, one piece after another, for about a minute. 4. Repeat this each morning for a week and notice which comes first, the bare awareness or the list of things known.

A man sleeps on a night train and wakes as it stops at a dark platform. For a few seconds he does not know where he is, or even quite who is asking. Then the world arrives in order: the window, the bench, his bag, his name, the errand he is travelling on. The Karikas would say he has just watched his own awareness take the shape of knower and known. In those first seconds there was only the plain fact of being aware. Then the lord's power showed itself as a person and a world. Seen this way, the moment is less frightening, because nothing has gone missing. The same light is present before and after the objects come. Ordinary experience confirms the small part of this that anyone can check: waking confusion is common, brief, and gives way to the familiar sense of self and surroundings. The teaching does not promise that the moment lasts, or that it will carry him through a missed connection, a bad night or a frightening diagnosis. It also does not replace a doctor if waking confusion is frequent, prolonged or new. It only says what the text says shines in that gap.
