Qualities and the rest are the outflowings of spanda, for they rest on the one universal spanda. For the one who knows, they keep coming into their own and are no obstacle. But for those whose minds are not awake, the very same ones, bent on covering over their own true standing, throw them down onto the dreadful, hard-to-cross road of the worldly round.

Three words carry this. Spanda is the throb of consciousness, from spand, to quiver. Guna means a quality or strand, the moods and tendencies that colour the mind. Samsara is the worldly round, from sam and sri, to flow along together. The karika says the qualities are not a separate force. They flow out of the one common spanda and rest on it. So for a person who knows this, they keep arriving as the play of that same throb, and they do not block the way. For the unawake, the same qualities work against them. Such people are set on hiding their own true standing, and the qualities knock them down onto a terrible road that is hard to cross, the round of worldly suffering. Nothing in the moods changes between the two people. Only the knowing changes. The teaching is placed here to answer a plain question: if spanda is everywhere, why do people still suffer? The answer given is that suffering belongs to not being awake to what the qualities rest on. The commentators read it as one flow with two outcomes, depending on the knower. What it asks of the listener is to know the source of every mood, and not only the mood.

A strong wind comes down a river. A sailor who knows her boat trims the sail, and the wind carries her. A child who has tied the rope round his wrist is dragged off the deck by the same wind. The wind is the qualities, the sail is knowing where they rise from, and the rope is the grip of the unawake mind.

1. Tonight, pick one mood that arrives, such as irritation, restlessness or dullness. Sit for two minutes and just watch it. 2. Ask where it came up from, not whose fault it is. Notice that it rose, stayed a while and began to change. 3. Before you act on it, say quietly, "This is rising from the same source as everything else I feel." 4. Then do the next ordinary task.

A mother is cooking at six in the evening. The rice is boiling over, a child is crying, and the phone rings. Irritation climbs in her chest before she has decided anything. The old reading offers another way to meet it. The irritation is one of the qualities, a movement that rose out of the common throb and has no author in her. She need not hide it, and she need not obey it. She notices it arriving, lowers the flame, picks up the child, and lets the call ring out. By the time the rice is served, the mood has usually thinned, as moods do when nothing feeds them. The teaching says the unawake are thrown down the hard road by exactly such moods, because they act as if the mood were the whole self. Ordinary experience agrees that a feeling acted on at its peak often has to be repaired later. The limit is plain. Noticing a mood does not remove tiredness or sorrow, and it does not replace a doctor when low mood or anger stays for weeks.
