Steady Attention to Spanda

Spanda Karika 1.21

Meaning · English

Therefore one who is constantly intent on discerning the principle of spanda, even while fully awake, comes before long to his own true state of being.

Four words carry this verse. Satatam udyukta means constantly intent, from ud-yuj, to yoke upward: effort held steady, not a burst. Spanda-tattva is the principle of spanda, the throb of consciousness that the Karikas treat as Shiva's own power, the stir by which awareness knows and acts. Viviktaye means for discerning, from vic, to separate out: seeing that throb as distinct from the thoughts and moods it shows up in. Nijam bhavam is one's own state of being, what one is before any role. The plain sense is this. Whoever keeps at discerning spanda, and does so while awake, reaches his own nature without long delay. The opening word, therefore, points back to the verses before it. There, those who rest in spanda are unobstructed, and those who are not awake to it fall onto the harsh road of worldly wandering. The question being answered is what to do about that difference. The Karikas answer with steady attention, and give a reason: it does not take long, and it needs no leaving of waking life. The commentators stress the words even while awake. The teaching asks for the same ordinary day, watched with constancy.

A mother rests a palm on her sleeping child's back. At first she feels only the blanket. If she keeps her hand there, the slow rise and fall appears, and it was never absent. Spanda is like that breathing: present under every waking moment, found by staying with it.

1. Choose one routine task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and give it five minutes. 2. While doing it, notice the instant a thought, urge or mood first stirs, before it turns into a story. 3. When you lose the thread, which will happen often, simply notice that you lost it and begin again. 4. Repeat at the same time tomorrow, so the effort is steady rather than large.

A woman is folding laundry on her balcony just after a sharp phone call with her sister. Her hands keep moving, but her mind is already composing replies. The verse speaks to that minute. She does not need to go anywhere quiet. She can stay with the folding and notice the first stir of feeling, the tightness or heat, before the arguing begins. The next time she does it, she may catch that stir a little sooner. Ordinary experience confirms that attention practised in small, repeated moments grows easier. Over weeks this is what the verse describes as constant effort: not one great sitting but many brief returns, each made while awake and occupied. The Karikas teach that this steady discerning leads to recognising one's own nature, and they say it comes soon. The verse does not settle the quarrel with her sister, and it does not ease the hurt on any timetable. It does not replace a doctor or a counsellor where distress runs deeper than a bad afternoon.
