Meaning · English

Blazing with anger, or overjoyed, or asking 'What shall I do?', or running in haste: at whatever place one arrives, there spanda is established.

Spanda is the throb of consciousness, the living pulse at the root of every experience. The verse names four ordinary conditions. Atikruddha is being swollen with rage. Prahrishta is being thrilled with gladness. Kim karomi is the stalled question 'What do I do?', the mind in perplexity. Dhavan is running, doing something in a hurry. These are the strongest, most disturbed states a person knows. The teaching says that wherever one lands, at the place one reaches, spanda is established there. The word for established, pratishthita, means standing firm, with a base under it. So the pulse is not absent from the storm. It is the footing of the storm. The reason for teaching it here is practical. The earlier verses say spanda is to be discerned, and that one who stays alert even in waking soon reaches one's own nature. A reader might think that is only possible in calm. These lines answer that worry: the most agitated moments are not the exception. They are also made of the one pulse, and so they are also a doorway. What it asks of the listener is only to remember this at the moment one arrives: the anger, the joy, the doubt, the haste has a ground, and that ground is already there.

A rubber ball is thrown hard. It bounces high, sideways, low, in no pattern anyone could predict. Every bounce, wild as it looks, begins and ends on the same floor. Fury, joy, doubt and hurry are the bounces; the floor under all of them is spanda.

1. Today, when a strong feeling arrives (irritation, gladness, a sudden 'now what?'), stop for three breaths wherever you are. 2. Do not fix or judge the feeling. Only notice that you are standing in it, and that something in you is aware of it. 3. Say quietly: 'This is where I have arrived.' 4. Then carry on with what you were doing. In the evening, recall which moment that was and how it felt to stop.

A father runs through a crowded railway station, because his small daughter let go of his hand a minute ago. His heart pounds, his thoughts narrow to one picture, and he cannot decide whether to go left or stay put. The verse speaks to him in the middle of that run. It says the panic, the haste and the stalled question 'What do I do?' are not a place cut off from the pulse of consciousness. He has arrived somewhere, and it is a ground that holds. In that moment this means one half-breath of noticing: here is fear, here is the one who sees it. That gives his next step a little room, so he may stop at the information desk instead of running in circles. Ordinary experience confirms that alarm shrinks our thinking and that even a brief pause widens it. The teaching does not promise the child will be found, remove the fear, or replace calling for help and the people who can search.
