The Roar of the Name
Rama Raksha Stotram 36
Meaning · English
The roar of 'Rama, Rama' roasts the seeds of worldly becoming, earns a store of happiness and good fortune, and frightens off the messengers of Death.
The hymn names three things the name does, and in the original they rhyme. First, roasting: the seeds of worldly becoming, whatever carries a life round into another birth, are roasted. Second, earning: happiness and its riches are gathered in. Third, threatening: the messengers of Death, Yama's servants, are warned off. And the calling is not a murmur. The word is a roar, the name said out loud and with force.
Toss a handful of roasted peanuts into garden soil and water them all season. Nothing comes up. They look like seeds, but the heat has ended what was inside them. The hymn pictures the seeds of rebirth the same way: still there, but after the name, they can no longer sprout into another round.
