Meaning · English
One who knows a tree's beginning and its end through the seed and the ripening stands apart from the tree, as its seer. In the same way the seer stands apart from the body. A person who does not tell the self apart from prakriti, nature, is without understanding. Bewildered by contact with the objects of the senses, he in truth enters samsara, the round of birth and death.
Three words carry it. Drashta is the seer, from drish, to see. Prithak means apart, separate. Prakriti is nature, from pra-kri, to make forth: the stuff the body, senses and mind are made of. Samsara is the wandering round, from sam-sri, to go on flowing. Krishna begins with a tree. Someone who knows how it starts from a seed and ends in ripeness and decay is not the tree. He stands outside it and sees it. Krishna says the self relates to the body the same way: it sees the body's coming and going, and is not what comes and goes. The second verse names the mistake. A person who does not separate the self from prakriti is called abudha, one without understanding. Contact with the senses' objects bewilders him, and he takes the body's story for his own. Krishna says that taking is itself samsara, and he says it is so in truth, not merely in feeling. The commentators read the pair of verses as one argument: seeing the difference is the cure for the confusion. He teaches it here because Uddhava has just heard the body's nine stages described. The question left open is who watches them. The teaching asks Uddhava to hold the body as something seen, not as himself.
A man sits on a verandah and watches the neighbour's mango tree through a whole year: flower, hard green fruit, ripeness, fallen leaves. He knows each stage and none of it happens to him. The man is the self, the tree is the body, and knowing its seasons is not the same as being it.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and notice one bodily thing: a heartbeat, an ache, tiredness, hunger. 2. Say plainly to yourself, "There is tiredness," instead of "I am wrecked." Notice who is saying it. 3. Tomorrow, when a strong wish for food, praise or comfort rises, name it as a wish and wait one minute before acting. 4. At day's end, remember one moment when you were the watcher, not the thing watched.
A retired carpenter stands at the bathroom mirror at dawn. His hands shake slightly as he lifts the razor. He thinks, "I am finished." The verse offers a different first sentence: "These hands are shaking, and I am the one who sees it." Then it asks for a second step. He can describe the shaking as he would describe a neighbour's tree: how long it has been there, what makes it worse, when it eases. Describing it that way is what a patient does when he tells a doctor exactly what he has seen. The shake stops being a verdict on who he is and becomes something to report and have looked at. Ordinary experience agrees that naming a feeling or symptom from slight distance steadies a person more than being swallowed by it. Krishna's claim goes further than that: he teaches that the seer is truly apart from the body, which is the text's teaching about the self. The verse does not stop the tremor, and it does not replace seeing a doctor. It only changes who the man takes himself to be while he waits for the appointment.
