Uddhava says to Krishna: "Achyuta, on this earth no one but you speaks this dharma, practises it, or protects it. Not even in Brahma's own assembly, where the branches of knowledge stand in bodily form, is there another. You are its maker, its guardian and its teacher, Madhusudana. Once you have left the earth, O Lord, who will speak of it when it has been lost? So tell us the truth of it, you who know every dharma: the dharma that is marked by devotion to you. Describe to me, Lord, how it is to be laid out for each person, as it fits him."
Uddhava is making a case for why Krishna must speak now. Three words carry it. Dharma is the way of living that holds a life and a world together. Lakshana is a mark or sign, so "marked by devotion" means a dharma whose visible sign is bhakti, loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Kala is a part or portion; the commentators take the embodied kalas in Brahma's assembly as branches of knowledge standing there in person. The first verse says that no one else, even in the highest assembly, speaks, practises and protects this dharma as Krishna does. The second names him its doer, protector and teacher, then asks the plain question: once he leaves, and the dharma is lost, who will speak it? The third asks him to state the truth of it and to set it out for each person as it fits. The heading speaks of the stages of life and the social order. That order is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, and the text offers it as such. What carries over is the request itself: duty cut to the size of a person's stage, not one measure for all. So the reason given for the teaching is need. A way of living is only as safe as the people who can still say it aloud. Uddhava asks because the one who can answer is about to go.
A power cut at night, and one candle burning in a house. Everyone has gathered round it, and the wick is already short. The candle is Krishna, the one voice that still holds this dharma. Uddhava asks for the flame to be passed on while it still burns.
1. Tonight, pick one older person you know and ask how they do one duty they have kept for years: a meal, a prayer, a way of welcoming guests. 2. Listen for ten minutes without correcting them. 3. Afterwards, write what they said in three plain lines and keep the page. 4. This week, do that one thing once yourself, their way, and notice what it asks of you.
A young potter sits by his master's bed in a hospital corridor. The old man has made pots for fifty years and never written down how he judges the clay. The apprentice realises he knows the steps but not the feel, and the one person who holds it is asleep six feet away. The verse speaks to that moment. First, it says plainly that some knowledge lives in one person and goes when they go. Second, it names the right moment to ask: now, while the teacher is here, not after. Third, it asks for the teaching fitted to the one who will use it. The apprentice does not need the whole craft in one night, only the part that is his to carry next week. So he asks one question, writes the answer down, and asks the next day. Ordinary experience confirms the worry: skills passed by example fade fast when the person who held them is gone. The limit is plain. Asking in time does not keep the master alive, and it does not turn a few notes into mastery. The text's own hope is narrower: that the dharma be spoken before it is lost.
