Asked in this way by his foremost servant, the Lord Hari was glad. For the welfare of mortals he spoke of the ancient laws of right living. He said: "This question of yours is a good one. It leads people to their highest good, those who keep the conduct of their castes and stages of life. Listen to it from me, Uddhava."

Three words carry the verse. Dharma, from dhri, to hold up, is the way of living that holds a person and a society steady. Kshema is welfare, being safe and well. Nihshreyasa, the highest good, is literally the 'no better': nothing beyond it is left to ask for. The narrator Shuka says that when Uddhava, Krishna's closest servant, asked about dharma, Hari was pleased. He answers for the welfare of mortals, and the laws he gives are called ancient, not new. Then Krishna speaks to Uddhava directly. He calls the question rooted in dharma and says it brings the highest good to people who live by the conduct of the varnas, the social orders, and the ashramas, the four stages of life. Then he tells Uddhava to listen. The reason for the praise comes from Uddhava's earlier plea: Krishna is about to leave the earth, and Uddhava asks who will carry dharma after him. A good question is the door to the teaching, so Krishna opens it with welcome. Sridhara Svami reads the opening as showing how Krishna's pleasure and his care for all mortals lead him to answer. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its own age. It is not a rule of birth for today. What still speaks is the pairing of duty with a stage of life, and a teacher who gladly receives a sincere question.

A village well-keeper, asked by a thirsty traveller how deep the water runs, sets down his rope and smiles, because the asking gives him the chance to draw. Krishna's gladness at Uddhava's question is that smile, and the teaching is the bucket coming up full.

1. Today, ask one person older or more experienced than you a real question about how to live or work, such as how they handled a hard year. 2. Ask it plainly, then listen for a full two minutes without adding your own story. 3. Tonight, when someone asks you something, notice whether you welcome it or feel bothered. Answer the next sincere question gladly, however small.

A young apprentice electrician has been wondering for a week whether to ask the old foreman why a certain wire is run the way it is. He fears it is a foolish question. At last he asks. The foreman puts down his tea and says it is a good one, then spends ten minutes showing him. The verse speaks to that moment in three steps. First, it shows that the teacher's gladness comes before the answer; Krishna is pleased before he says a word of dharma. Second, it shows the question being weighed by where it leads, to welfare and the highest good, not by how clever it sounds. Third, it shows the learner being asked only to listen. Ordinary experience bears this out: people who are met warmly keep asking, and people who are shamed stop. The verse does not promise that every teacher will be kind, or that a good question brings an easy answer. It also gives no medical or practical answer by itself. Where a question concerns health, a doctor is still the one to ask.
