Meaning · English
To one who sees clearly, all of experience is suffering: it keeps changing, it burns with wanting and worry, it leaves habits in the mind, and the mind's own working qualities pull against one another.
Four reasons are given, so take the words one at a time. Parinama is change, a thing turning into something else. Even a pleasant moment is already ending. Tapa is burning: the worry of holding on to what is pleasant and the heat of wanting it again. Samskara is the impression an experience leaves behind. Each pleasure lays a groove that pulls the mind back toward it. Guna-vritti is the turning of the three strands of nature, which are the qualities everything the mind meets is made of. These strands pull against each other, so the mind is never at rest for long. Duhkha is suffering, and viveka is discernment, the power to tell one thing from another. The vivekin, the discerning one, is the person who has it. The sutra says that for this person all of it is duhkha. Patanjali says this because 2.13 and 2.14 showed that every life brings fruits of joy and affliction. Here he looks closely at the joy and finds the same weakness in it. Vyasa takes the sutra this way: even pleasure carries fear of loss and the pull of craving, so the one who sees finely cannot call any of it safe. Later readers, such as Vachaspati Mishra, mostly follow him.
A single hair lying on your palm goes unnoticed. The same hair in your eye is unbearable. Most people feel only the large griefs of life. The discerning mind is like the eye, fine enough to feel even the small, ordinary friction in what others call comfort.
1. Choose one pleasant thing today, such as a cup of tea or a song, and enjoy it fully. 2. As it ends, notice what the mind does next. Does it grip, wish for more, or dread the loss? 3. Before bed, take two minutes to recall one small want that nagged you today. Notice how long it lasted and what ended it. 4. Only notice. Do not argue with what you find.
