The Knot Behind Suffering

Yoga Sutras 2.17

Meaning · English

What is to be avoided has one cause: the one who sees has become joined with what is seen.

Four words carry this sutra. Drashtri is the seer, from the root drish, to see. It is the witnessing awareness. Drishya is what can be seen: body, senses, mind, the whole world of objects and feelings. Samyoga is sam, together, plus yoga, a yoking. It means a joining so close that the two are taken for one. Heya is what is to be avoided, and hetu is its cause. Patanjali's sentence is short. The cause of the avoidable suffering is the yoking of the seer to what it sees. Nothing else is named. The world is not blamed, and neither is the seer. The fault lies in the joining. He says this because the verses before it raise a problem. Life looks like suffering to one who discerns, and coming suffering is to be avoided. A reader then asks where it starts. This sutra answers: at the point where the witness takes the mind's passing states as its own. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, reads the joining as the seer appearing to undergo whatever the mind undergoes. The seen exists for the seer's experience, and the seer is mistaken for it. The commentators differ on how to describe this joining, but they agree it is the thing to be undone.

A man at the cinema weeps at the film. The screen is only light and shadow, and he sits quite still in his seat, yet he is wet-faced as if it were his own loss. The screen is what is seen. He is the seer. The suffering begins in the forgetting that he is in the chair.

1. Pick one irritation or worry today, such as a delayed message or a sharp remark. 2. For one minute, say silently what is present: "there is annoyance" or "there is worry." Use "there is," not "I am." 3. Notice that something is aware of the feeling, and that the awareness is not itself annoyed. 4. Then notice whether the feeling grips tighter or looser when it is named this way. Only notice. Do not judge the result.
