Meaning · English
What is seen is made of brightness, movement and rest. It takes shape as the elements and the senses. It exists for two purposes: to give the Seer experience, and then to set the Seer free.
Start with the words. Prakasha is shining, the quality that lets a thing show itself. Kriya is action, movement, change. Sthiti is staying put, rest, weight. Drishya is the seen, whatever can be an object of sight, outside or inside. Bhoga is experience, the taking in of things. Apavarga is release, a setting free. The plain sense: Patanjali teaches that everything seen has a nature built from brightness, motion and stillness. It appears as the bhuta, the elements, and the indriya, the senses. And it has two purposes only: experience for the Seer, then release. Why he says it: the sutra just before names the joining of Seer and seen as the cause of the pain to be warded off. A reader then needs to know what the seen is. Here it is described as a working thing with a job, not as an enemy. Experience comes first, release after. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads the three qualities as sattva, rajas and tamas, and says the seen exists for the Seer's experience and liberation. The later commentators broadly follow him.
A night fair in a town square: lamps glowing, crowds moving, heavy sacks stacked still beside the stalls. A visitor walks through, takes in the sights, and then goes home. The lamps, the bustle and the weight are the seen. The walk through and the going home are experience and release.
1. Once today, pause for two minutes in any room. Silently sort what you see: what shines or is lit, what moves, what sits still and heavy. 2. In the evening, notice whether your mind feels clear, restless or dull. Only name which it is. 3. Before sleep, recall one thing you took in today, a taste, a sound, a conversation. Ask what it gave you, and let it go.
