A Thumb-Sized Ruler Within
Katha Upanishad 2.1.12
Meaning · English
A person no bigger than a thumb stays in the middle of the self, ruler of what has been and what will be. Once he is known, there is no more shrinking back from anything. This is that.
Yama answers Nachiketas with three words worth taking apart. Purusha means person, and also what dwells in a city or body. Atman is the self, the one who is awake in you. Ishana means ruler, one who holds authority. The last clause of the verse turns on a word for shrinking away, the flinch of recoiling from something. Yama says a purusha the size of a thumb stands at the center of the self. He rules over what has been and what will be. Whoever knows him no longer shrinks back from anything. Then Yama adds that this is the very thing Nachiketas asked about. The reason is the fear that Yama has just been describing. Seeing the world as split into separate, threatening things breeds flinching. A self that stands at the center of past and future is not carried off by either. Nothing coming has power over what already holds time. Shankara reads the thumb measure as the space of the heart, where the self is held in meditation. He says the self has no size and the measure is only a help for the mind. Shankara also takes the last clause to mean the knower no longer guards himself against anything.
The hub of a cartwheel is a small block of wood at the center. The rim hits every stone and rut, and the spokes strain, yet the hub turns in place and carries the whole cart. The self is that hub: small to the eye, still at the center, and the road's roughness belongs to the rim.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with one hand on the middle of your chest. Notice the quiet awareness that is simply watching, apart from your thoughts. 2. When a worry about next week or an old regret arrives, say silently, "That is about later" or "That is about before." Notice what is still here, aware of the worry. 3. Once this week, when you feel yourself pulling back from something hard, such as a phone call or a bill, take three slow breaths before you decide.
A mother sits in the car outside her daughter's school, rehearsing how to say that the family is moving. Her stomach is tight. Her mind jumps between the argument last night and the empty flat waiting in a new city. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she would see that the jumping is between past and future, and that something in her is aware of both. Yama's teaching places the self there, at the center, as ruler of both. Second, that awareness does not flinch, though the thoughts do. Third, she can let her breath slow, put her hands on the wheel, and choose her first sentence from that steadiness instead of from the tightness. Ordinary experience confirms the pattern: when a person is afraid, attention narrows, and it widens again once the body settles. The verse does not promise that the daughter will take the news well, or that the move will go smoothly. It does not remove sadness, and where fear has grown into constant dread, a doctor or counselor is the right person to see.
