Light Without Smoke
Katha Upanishad 2.1.13
Meaning · English
That person, no bigger than a thumb, is like a flame with no smoke. He rules over what has been and what will be. He is the same today as tomorrow. This is that.
Three words carry the verse. Purusha is the person, from a root sense of one who dwells in the city of the body. Angushtha-matra means thumb-sized: a measure of nearness and smallness, not of inches. Ishana means a ruler, one who holds sway. Yama tells Nachiketas that this inner person is like a flame with no smoke. Smoke is what a burning fire gives off, and it clouds the air. A flame without smoke is pure light: steady, clear, showing things as they are. Yama then says this person rules over the past and the future. Nothing that has happened or will happen stands outside it. And it is the same today and tomorrow, so it does not rise, fall, age or wear out as moods and years do. Yama says this because Nachiketas asked what remains when the body is gone. The answer is that something in us does not change with time. Shankara reads the person as the Self, atman, which is Brahman itself, and reads the thumb size as a way of speaking, since the Self has no size. The listener is asked to look for what stays constant under all that changes. Yama closes with the words: this is that, the very thing you asked about.
A candle burning in a closed room on a still night. Its flame stands upright, quiet and clean, with no soot, and it looks the same at dusk as at midnight. The Self is that flame: small to look at, lighting everything near it, unchanged by the hours passing.
1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for three minutes with a lit lamp or candle, if you have one, or simply in the dark. 2. Notice one thing in you that is different from this morning: your mood, your energy, your worry. 3. Then notice that something is aware of all that change and does not itself seem to change. 4. Rest there for a minute without trying to explain it.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while his father is in surgery. Thoughts run to the past, to old quarrels, and to the future, to what the doctor may say. His mind is thick with both. Yama's teaching would turn him, step by step, toward what is watching. He notices the fear, the memory and the tiredness as things that come and go. He notices that he, the one noticing, is still here, as he was yesterday and will be tomorrow. That does not quiet the fear by force, but it gives him somewhere to stand while it passes. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: people often feel steadier when they step back and observe a feeling rather than being swept by it. The text goes further and calls that witness the Self, lord of past and future, and that is its own teaching. The verse does not promise that his father will live, that grief will not come, or that he can skip the doctor's news. It does not replace medical care or the company of family.
