Prahlada Turns to Vishnu

The story · English
Vasishtha said to Rama, listen to the story of Prahlada, lord of the demons, who became wise by his own insight. In the underworld lived a mighty demon named Hiranyakasipu, as valiant as Narayana himself. He drove the gods from their homes and took every treasure of the world from Hari, the way a swan crowds a bee off the broad leaves of a lotus. He ruled all three worlds, and in time he had many sons, who grew up bright as suns. The eldest, Prahlada, became regent, prized among them like the Kaustubha jewel on Vishnu's breast. His father delighted in him as a year delights in spring.
Proud of his son and his own strength, Hiranyakasipu swelled like a rutting elephant. He drained the earth with crushing taxes, as the suns at the end of time dry up the world. The gods, the sun and the moon could bear it no longer, and they went to Brahma and begged for the demon's end. Then Hari appeared as Narasingha, half man and half lion. His roar filled the sky like the elephants of the quarters thundering together. His claws and teeth flashed like lightning, mountains shook, and fire poured from his eyes. He gored the giant demon with his tusks, and his burning gaze consumed the demon city. The demons fled like moths from a flame.
When the demon race lay broken, Hari vanished, and the gods greeted him with thanks. The surviving sons, who had fled the burning city, were led back by Prahlada, the way birds return to a lakebed after rain. They mourned among the dead, lamented what they had lost, and performed the funeral rites. Then they called back the other survivors. The Asuras sat in the ruins, bent like lotuses struck by frost, still as figures in a painting, as hopeless as a tree split by lightning. Prahlada stayed in the underworld, brooding on how Hari goes after the best of them, like a monkey nipping the new shoots of a tree.
Prahlada listed what he saw. The Daityas were nowhere left in peace. The gods, once servants at his father's feet, now held the kingdom, like timid deer taking over a lion's forest. Houses stood open and full of dust, with barley sprouting in the inner rooms. The demon women crouched like frightened deer, while heavenly nymphs mocked them and served Indra with the same fans that once cooled his father. Then he reasoned that Hari had fought their forefathers before, in many terrible wars, and would not fear them now. So he saw only one way. They must turn to Hari with whole hearts, because he alone is the cause of the world's making, keeping and ending.
I will think only of Narayana from now on, Prahlada said, and let that faith stay in my heart as wind stays in the open air. Whoever worships Vishnu without feeling himself full of Vishnu gains little, but whoever worships as one with the god becomes one with him. Then he began to see Hari everywhere. The sun and moon were his two eyes, the sky his dark blue body. The conch was the white of the milky ocean, the discus was the rising sun, the bow was the rainbow, and the quiver was the pouring rain clouds. The wicked demons, he saw, blew away like straw before the wind, and no power could stand against Vishnu.
Prahlada made an image of Narayana seated on Garuda, four-armed, holding conch, discus, club and lotus. He called the spirit of Vishnu into it, and then he worshipped, first in his mind and then with real offerings. He brought gems and jewels on plates, sandal paste in jars, incense, and rows of lamps. He hung garlands of Mandara flowers and golden lotus chains, and wreaths of flowers of every kind. Day after day he did the same, and the more he gave, the happier he grew. His people followed him, and every Daitya became a worshipper of Hari. The news reached heaven, and even Indra and the Rudras marvelled that the demons had changed so suddenly.
The gods went to Vishnu, lying on his serpent couch in the milky ocean, and told him everything. They asked, Lord, how is it that the demons who always opposed you now embrace your faith? It looks like magic or pretense. Such faith comes only after many lifetimes, and these are the same ones who broke mountains in rebellion. A rich jewel loses its worth set among pebbles, and the lotus belongs in water, not on dry land. Hari answered them in a voice like rain clouds answering thirsty peacocks. Do not wonder at Prahlada. By the good he did in past lives, he will be freed in this one, and never be born again, like a fried pea that cannot sprout. The gods were calmed, and went home.
Prahlada kept up his worship, and gave up pleasure, as a stag avoids a withered tree. He sought freedom, but his mind swung between enjoyment and rest, like a cradle. Hari saw this from the milky ocean, and came by the underground road to Prahlada's altar. Prahlada worshipped him twice over, then praised him as unborn, undying, the refuge of the friendless, dark as a blue lotus petal, with Lakshmi at his side. Hari said, Jewel of the Daitya race, ask your boon. Prahlada replied, Give me whatever you think best. Hari said, May you have clear discrimination, find your rest in God, and be freed from the errors of the world. Then he vanished.
Prahlada made his offerings, sat in the lotus posture, and began to ask what was true. I am not this body, which moves a moment by the breath. I am not sound, or touch, or taste, or sight, or smell. I am pure awareness, the one who sees, the light by which a pot or a painting is known. Everything arises from that, as flame unfolds into spark and light. The gods themselves come from it, and it fills the lowest grass as well as the highest god. It is beyond my and thy, beyond time and place and shape. It is the sun's body, and it is Vishnu. In that stillness he felt himself as vast as the universe.
I have gained an empire without seeking it, he said. This world is too small to hold me, like a needle's eye for an elephant. How foolish my forefathers were to leave this and wander. What did my father gain from a few years of power? Anyone who has not tasted the bliss of the soul has had no true blessing in a hundred years of ruling. To trade it for worldly pleasure is like the camel leaving soft leaves for desert thorns. Happiness lies in a calm and steady mind. When the mind lets go of liking and disliking, only stillness remains, and that is freedom. Prahlada ended with a greeting. I have sought you long, and at last found you rising in myself. I bow to that cloudless light, shining like the full moon within me.
