Prahlada's Long Stillness

Yoga Vasishtha 5.39

The story · English

Vasishtha told Rama how Hari left his home in the Milky Ocean with his companions, moving as steadily as the great Mandara mountain. He went down by a hidden passage under the waters of the deep and came up in the city of Prahlada, which was as grand as Indra's own capital. He found the prince of the Asuras sitting beneath a golden dome, lost in a trance. He looked like Brahma sitting in meditation in a mountain cave. The Daityas around him were touched by the bright rays of Vishnu's body. They scattered at once, the way owls flee from the rising sun. Hari walked on with only two or three Daitya chiefs beside him, like the moon entering the evening sky with a few stars for company, and came to Prahlada's chamber.

There he stood, seated on his eagle. Lakshmi fanned him, his weapons were in his hands, and saints sang his praise all around. He said, "Great soul, rise from your trance." Then he blew his conch, the panchajanya. The sound rolled up to the vault of heaven. It roared like thunderclouds and like the waves of the great flood. The Daityas fell flat and fainting, like swans and geese stunned by thunder. Vishnu's own followers were glad and unafraid, and they bloomed with joy like flowers opening to the rain. Prahlada woke slowly, the way kadamba blossoms open a little at a time between showers. His held breath came down from the crown of his head, as the Ganges comes down from its high hills, and spread through his whole body like sunrise spreading over the world.

The breath reached the nine gateways of the senses, and his mind began to take in the world, the way a mirror takes in a face. His eyelids stirred and opened like a blue lotus at morning. His body moved as a breeze moves lotuses, and his strength grew as a river swells with water. His eyes shone, and he looked like a lake blushing with flowers at sunrise. Hari told him to wake at his word, and Prahlada rose like a peacock at a thunderclap. Seeing his bright eyes and steady mind, Hari spoke to him as he had once spoken to Brahma. "Remember your dominions and your youthful form. Why have you sunk into this stillness for no reason? You want no good and fear no evil. Whatever God ordains is for your good."

Hari went on. "You will live here for a whole kalpa, free in mind and holding your kingdom, without worry. When the body wears out like a clay pot, your life will mingle with the open air. The end of the world is still far off. The twelve suns are not yet blazing, the rocks are not melting, and the gods have not died. Why waste your body now? I travel on my eagle and guard living beings so that none die before their time, and I do not like to see you neglect yourself." Then he spoke of death and life. Death welcomes the man ruled by greed, tormented by desire, worn down by disease. Life is a blessing to the even-minded, the pure, and the one whose very name gives delight.

"Life," said Hari, "is the body's soundness, and death is leaving it for another. You are free of both, Prahlada. You live in a body, yet you are bodiless, like the wind that moves through the sky and clings to nothing. What you perceive is like what you see in a dream. Whether hills fall, fire consumes the world, or creation comes and goes, it is nothing to the soul that rests in itself. So give up thinking, 'I will do this, then that.' A man who plants no seed reaps no harvest. When you stop acting for reward, a stillness settles in you, and that is liberation. So do your duties as easily as in sleep. Take in the world as a mirror takes in reflections, and enjoy your bliss for a kalpa."

Prahlada's body bloomed, and he answered clearly. "Lord, I was tired from so many state affairs and from worrying over my people's joy and grief. Now I have found a little rest. Whether in trance or awake, I have peace by your grace. I always saw you in my heart, and now I see you before me. I was not grieving, or dull, or set on giving up my body. A pure longing for holiness rose in me on its own, and I stayed where it led. It is not the body that torments us. Worldliness is the viper, and it bites only the ignorant. The wise accept all things as they come. I act now as you wish." He offered Hari the welcome-gift, and then honored Garuda, the weapons, and the gods who had come.

Hari said, "Rise, lord of the Danavas, and sit on your throne. I will crown you this very moment." He blew the conch again and called the five peoples, gods, siddhas, sadhyas, men and Daityas, to the ceremony. He seated Prahlada on the throne like a cloud resting on a mountain peak. Water from the milky ocean and the other seas, and from the Ganges and the holy rivers, was poured over him. Brahmans, rishis, siddhas and the guardians of the quarters stood by, and Hari anointed him king of the Daityas. Then he said, "Reign as long as Meru stands and the sun and moon shine. Rule without selfish aim, without anger or fear. Trouble neither gods nor men. The old wars end today, and no more wives will be carried off or tears shed."

Hari left with the gods, Kinnaras and men. Prahlada and his people threw handfuls of flowers after him as he rode off on Garuda. He crossed the heavenly Ganges and reached the milky ocean, where he settled on his serpent couch as a bee settles on a lotus leaf. Prahlada, for his part, sat in the underworld with his cares gone. Vasishtha told Rama that anyone who thinks over this story is cleansed of past sins. Rama asked how a conch shell could rouse a mind sunk in meditation. Vasishtha said there are two liberations: one while living in the body, one after leaving it. The living liberated are like parched grain that can no longer sprout. Such a man may stay entranced a thousand years, as Prahlada did, until the conch woke him at Hari's will.

Vasishtha said, "Hari is the soul of all beings, so whoever turns his thoughts to Hari becomes one with that soul. Put out the visible sights, Rama, look at the soul within you, and you will soon see God. The world is a rainy, gloomy place that would freeze us in ignorance without the sun of reason." Rama, pleased as medicinal plants in moonlight, asked, "If effort brings success, how did Prahlada become wise without effort or a teacher?" Vasishtha answered, "By his own effort, and by nothing else. The human soul and Narayana are no more apart than oil and sesame seed. Sometimes the soul wakes by its own insight, sometimes through faith in Vishnu. But even Vishnu cannot give knowledge to a person who will not use his reason."

"So the first cause of enlightenment is your own understanding," Vasishtha said. "Grace is secondary. Seeing Vishnu's image costs no effort, and it does not save you, or the birds and beasts would all be saved. Self-control and steady practice do what nothing else can. The outward Vishnu, with his conch, club, lotus and discus, is only a picture of the awareness that lives in your heart. Worship of the image can calm the mind, and that is why the scriptures prescribe it, but it is a first step. Mental labor is the foundation of every good, as tilled soil is of a harvest. People can be reborn a thousand times and worship every god, and still find no rest while their minds are restless. So, Rama, leave off worshipping the visible form. Meditate on your consciousness alone, see the one infinite God in yourself, taste that sweet essence, and cross the ocean of births."
