The householder's life came from my thighs. The student's life of discipline came from my heart. Life in the forest came from my chest, and renunciation was set upon my head. The natures of people, in their classes and in their stages of life, arose according to birth and place: some lowest, some middling, some highest.
Krishna places the four stages of life on his own body. The householder stage, grihastha, comes from his thighs, the part that carries weight. The student stage, brahmacharya, comes from his heart; the word means walking in discipline, the way of a learner. The forest stage, vanaprastha, comes from his chest. Renunciation, sannyasa, is set on his head. In sannyasa the word nyasa means laying down. The commentators read this as a picture: each stage has its own place and its own work, and none is a stranger to him. The second verse turns to people. Their natures, prakriti, arose following birth and place, and they run from low through middling to highest. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age. It is not a rule laid on readers today. Uddhava has asked how people should live, and Krishna answers that a life has seasons and that each season has its own duty. What still speaks is plain: do the work that belongs to the stage you are in, keep life simple, and care for guests and elders. Krishna asks Uddhava to see the whole arc of a life as held in him.
A tree has roots, a trunk, branches and a last fine tip, and no part envies another, because the tree needs all of them. A life is the same. The stages are parts of one growth, each holding up the next.
1. This morning, name the stage you are in now: learning, providing for others, easing back, or letting go. 2. Pick one duty that belongs to that stage and do it fully today, however small. 3. Offer water or tea to the next person who comes to your door, before you ask what they want. 4. Spend ten quiet minutes with an elder, listening more than you speak.
A grandfather stands at the shop he opened forty years ago, holding the bunch of keys. His son is waiting. He has been opening that shutter at six every morning since before the boy was born, and his hand will not let go. The verse speaks to this moment by setting the seasons side by side. The one who provides, the one who steps back and the one who lays down are all held in the same body. So handing over the keys becomes a stage moving on, and he is not being cast out. He can pass the ledger, stay to teach the first month, and begin to sit with the morning instead of running it. Ordinary experience bears out that a person doing the work of an earlier season, past its time, often feels strained and a little bitter. The teaching does not promise that the handover will be painless, that grief for the old routine will vanish, or that every family will meet it kindly. It also offers no medical or financial advice for the years ahead, and those still need their own counsel. The Bhagavata also gives its account of natures by birth and place as the picture of its own age. It is not a measure of any person today.
