Calm of mind, mastery of the senses, austerity, cleanliness, contentment, forgiveness, straightness, devotion to me, compassion and truthfulness: these are the natural qualities of the brahmana. Radiance, strength, steadiness, courage, endurance, generosity, effort, firmness, reverence for the learned and the bearing of a ruler: these are the natural qualities of the kshatriya.

This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, where Krishna sorts people by temperament. It is not a rule for today. Krishna lists the marks of two orders, the teacher-priest and the warrior-ruler. Four words carry most of it. Sama is calm of mind, from a root meaning to grow quiet. Dama is restraint of the senses, from a root meaning to tame. Titiksha is endurance, literally the wish to bear: heat, cold, insult and delay without breaking. Brahmanyata is reverence for the learned and the holy. For the first order, Krishna names inner qualities: calm, restraint, austerity, cleanliness, contentment, forgiveness, honesty, devotion to himself, kindness and truth. For the second, he names outer ones: brightness, strength, steadiness, courage, endurance, open-handedness, drive, firmness, respect for the wise and the capacity to rule. Each order is described by what it does well, so that a person knows what to grow into. The commentators read these as the natural pull of a person's character, not as a tally of rights. Krishna is teaching Uddhava that dharma is fitted to the person, and that devotion to Krishna sits among the qualities of the first list.

A good house needs a quiet inner room and a strong front door. In the quiet room people rest, speak truly and forgive. At the door someone stands firm, bears the weather and keeps trouble out. The two lists are those two jobs: inner calm and outer steadiness.

1. Tonight, choose one quality from the lists that you lack, such as forgiveness, truthfulness or endurance. 2. Tomorrow, watch for the first moment it is tested, perhaps a delay, a sharp word or a small lie that would be easy. 3. In that moment, pause for one breath and act on the quality once. 4. Before sleep, spend two minutes recalling what happened. Note only what you did, without scoring yourself.

A taxi driver is cut off at a junction, and a passenger starts shouting about the fare while he is still shaking from the near miss. Krishna's list suggests a path. First comes calm, sama: the hands stay loose and the voice stays low. Then endurance, titiksha: he lets the first insult pass without answering it. Then straightness: he says the fare plainly and truthfully, and does not bluff. Last comes compassion: the passenger may be late for something that matters to him. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, hungry person loses restraint first, so rest and food help these qualities hold. The teaching does not promise the passenger will calm down, or that the fare dispute ends well. It does not cure the fear after a close call, and it does not replace help where someone is truly in danger or in need of care. It describes how a person steadies himself while the moment is still hard.
