Faith that there is more than this world, steadiness in giving, no pretence, service to the brahmins, and never being satisfied with the wealth gathered: these are the natural qualities of the vaishya. Service to the twice-born, to cows and to the gods, without deceit, and contentment with whatever is received there: these are the natural qualities of the shudra.

Krishna is still listing the natural bents of people, one group after another. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, and it is not offered here as a rule of birth for today. Four words carry the teaching. Prakriti means a person's natural make-up, from pra and kri, what is set down first. Astikya means faith, from asti, 'it is': a settled trust that there is more than what the eye sees. Shushrusha means service, from the wish to listen: serving begins in attention. Santosha means contentment, from sam and tush, to be well satisfied. For the vaishya, the trader and farmer, Krishna names faith, steady giving, and no show or pretence. He adds respect for brahmins and a restlessness that is never satisfied with the wealth gathered. That last trait drives the work. It sits beside giving, so the earning does not close in on itself. For the shudra, the servant, he names service to the twice-born, to cows and to the gods, done without deceit, and contentment with what that work brings. It comes here because Krishna is answering how natures differ across the orders of society. What still reaches a reader is plain: earn and let it flow outward, serve without trickery, and know when what you have is enough.

A channel cut through a dry field stays useful only while water keeps moving through it. Water left standing in one pit goes stale. The gathering of wealth is meant to be like that channel: it earns the water, then carries it on to others by giving.

1. Today, give something small to one person, such as food, a few coins, or an hour of help. Do not mention it afterwards. 2. This week, do one chore for an elder or a guest, for about ten minutes, with no hint that you expect thanks. 3. Tonight, name one thing you received today that is already enough, and say it aloud once.

A man gets his year-end bonus and is pleased for about an hour. Then he hears what a colleague received, and the sum feels small. A cousin also asks for help with a wedding. Ordinary experience shows that wanting tends to move ahead of whatever has just been gained. The verse offers a different order of steps. First he lets the wish to earn more stand; the text does not call it wrong. Then he sets some of the bonus aside for the cousin, as a plain act of giving. Then he does the helping honestly, with no show of generosity. Last, he names what the bonus already covers: rent, school fees, a meal at home. What this does not promise is relief from real need. If the sum cannot cover the rent, contentment will not cover it either, and the verse does not say it will. It also does not settle whether he should ask for more pay. It describes a temper of mind in work and giving, and leaves the particular decision to the person.
