Uncleanness, untruth, theft, disbelief, quarrel for its own sake, desire, anger and craving: these are the nature of those who stand last in the order. Not harming, truthfulness, not taking what is another's, freedom from desire, anger and greed, and a wish for the good and gladness of every living being: this is the dharma of all the classes.

Three words carry the second half. Ahimsa is not harming, from a, not, and himsa, the wish to strike or injure. Asteya is not stealing, from steya, theft. Bhuta-priya-hita is the wish for the gladness and true good of every creature, from bhuta, a being, priya, what pleases, and hita, what really helps. Now the clauses. In the first, Krishna names the leanings he says belong to the lowest group in the social order of his age: dirtiness, lying, taking what is not given, disbelief, empty quarrelling, desire, anger and craving. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its own time, sorted by birth. It is not a rule for today. In the second, he turns and lists what belongs to every class alike: harmlessness, truth, honesty with other people's things, freedom from desire, anger and greed, and care for all beings. Why say it here? Krishna has been describing the leanings of each class for Uddhava. Before he moves on to the stages of life, he fixes a floor under all of it. The faults in the first half are the very ones the second half answers: lying against truth, theft against honesty, desire, anger and craving against freedom from them. Whatever a person's place or duty, Krishna teaches that this much is asked of them.

A village has many houses, each with its own door, work and customs. At the edge of the lane stands one well that every household draws from. The well is the shared dharma: whatever a family's trade or station, the same clean water is there for all of them.

1. Pick one of three things for today: no lie, however small; no taking of anything not yours, even a pen or a minute of someone's time; or no sharp word when you are annoyed. 2. When the moment comes, pause for one breath before you answer or reach. 3. Before sleep, spend two minutes recalling one thing you did today that was simply good for another person, and note whether the day felt lighter.

A fruit seller counts his takings at closing time and finds the last customer overpaid him by a few coins. He is tired, the rent is due, and nobody saw. The pull comes first, a quiet craving dressed as fairness: it was their mistake. Then the verse does its work in steps. He names the pull as craving rather than argument. He asks whether taking it is honest with another person's property. He thinks of the customer, perhaps a student who counted carefully, and the wish for that person's good settles it. He puts the coins aside to return tomorrow. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, and that anger and greed grow when they are fed. It also suggests that honesty, harmlessness and goodwill are habits any person can practise, and that lying or anger are not tied to a group by birth. That sorting is the Bhagavata's picture of its age, and today's understanding does not carry it forward. The verse does not promise that the rent will be paid, that the loss will not sting, or that the pull will vanish. It marks where the line sits.
