Meaning · English
Having received the second birth, the initiation, in its proper order, the student lives in the teacher's house, self-governed, and studies the Veda whenever the teacher calls him. He wears a waist-cord and a deerskin, the sacred thread, and a string of beads, and he carries a staff and a water pot. His hair is matted. His teeth and clothes are not scrubbed for show. He sits on no dyed seat, and he holds kusha grass.
Krishna is describing the student stage, brahmacharya, to Uddhava. Three words carry it. Dvija means twice-born: the first birth is from the mother, the second is the initiation, upanayana, that brings a boy to a teacher, and the word comes from dvi, two, and ja, born. Gurukula is the teacher's household, from guru, one who is heavy with knowledge, and kula, family. Danta means self-restrained, from dam, to tame. Krishna's order is plain. First the initiation, then life in the teacher's house, restraint, and study of the Veda when the teacher calls, not when the mood arrives. Then comes the dress: waist-cord, deerskin, thread, beads, staff, water pot. Each is a small, useful thing. Matted hair, teeth and clothes not made bright for show, and a seat that is not dyed all say the same: no decoration. The kusha grass is a clean seat and a ritual tool. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, and it speaks of boys of the twice-born ranks. It is not offered as a rule for today. What still speaks is the logic behind it. A learner owns little, serves a teacher, and lets the teacher set the hours. The commentators take the garb as the outward marks of the student's vow. Krishna gives it here because Uddhava asked about duties by stage of life, and the student stage comes first.
A hiker packing for a long mountain walk takes a stick, a water bottle, one warm layer and nothing that shines. Every item has a job, and the weight is small. The student's few belongings work the same way: they carry only what the climb into learning needs.
1. Tomorrow morning, put out the one thing you need for your most important task: a book, a notebook, a tool. 2. Leave out one thing meant only to look good, such as an extra accessory or a second screen. 3. Work at that task for twenty minutes when you are first called to it, not when you feel ready. 4. Afterward, notice what you did not miss.
A father packs a bag for his daughter, who leaves tomorrow for a hostel and a hard course. The cupboard is full of choices, and he catches himself adding things that are nice rather than needed. Krishna's picture of the student suggests a different packing list: a few things that serve the work, a place to study, and a teacher whose call sets the hour. The father puts back the third pair of shoes and keeps the notebook, the water bottle, the plain clothes. He tells her to go to class when the bell rings, not when she feels like it. Ordinary experience bears out one small part of this: with fewer things to choose between each morning, more attention is left for the work. The teaching does not promise she will not be homesick or struggle with the subject. It does not replace a doctor if she is unwell, and it does not tell her how a hostel is run today. It speaks only of what a learner is wise to carry.
