While bathing, eating, making offering to the fire, chanting, and relieving himself, he keeps silent. He does not cut his nails or his body hair, not even in the armpits or the private parts. He never lets his seed be spilled, for he himself bears the vow of the celibate student. If it is spilled, he bathes in water, holds his breath in check, and repeats the three-footed verse.

Three words carry this teaching. Vagyata is a silence kept on purpose: vak is speech, yata is held in. Brahmacarya is the student's vow: brahma is sacred learning, carya is living in it. Tripadi, the three-footed verse, is the sacred verse of three lines that the commentators take to be the Gayatri. Krishna tells Uddhava that the student keeps silent at five ordinary moments: bathing, eating, the offering at the fire, chanting, and answering nature's call. Nothing is said over these acts, so each is done whole and with attention. He also leaves his nails and body hair uncut, even the hair in hidden places. That is plain austerity: no grooming for appearance. Next comes the heart of the vow. The student does not let his seed be spilled, because he himself is the one who carries the vow. If it happens anyway, Krishna gives a repair: bathe in water, steady the breath, repeat the three-footed verse. The vow is not treated as broken beyond mending. This is the Bhagavata's picture of a student's life in the society of its age, and Krishna gives it as a discipline for one stage. The question behind it is how a young person gathers strength for learning. The answer is to keep speech, appetite, and vanity under rein, and to return calmly when he slips.

A cook carries a brimming pot of hot milk across a crowded kitchen. She does not chat, glance about, or hurry. If a little spills, she wipes it and carries on. The pot is the student's vow, and the quiet steadiness is the silence and restraint.

1. At one meal today, eat the first five minutes without speaking and without a screen. 2. Bathe or wash your hands once today in silence, noticing the water and how your mind wanders. 3. When you catch yourself speaking or snacking on impulse, stop for one breath, then carry on. 4. Tonight, note which of these felt steadiest.

A young man in a hostel mess hall eats his dinner with one eye on his phone, arguing with a friend across the table, and finds afterward that he barely tasted anything. Krishna's advice to the student, as the text gives it, would change that moment in small steps. First the talking stops. Then the plate gets his attention. Then the meal ends, and he notices he is full. Ordinary experience confirms that attention given to one act settles the mind, and that a distracted meal is easily overeaten. Other parts need care. Doctors see no health reason to leave nails and body hair uncut, and long nails hold dirt, so ordinary trimming is sound hygiene. The text asks for this as an austerity of the student's vow, not as health advice. The same goes for bathing after a spill of seed. Nocturnal emission is a normal bodily event, and washing afterward is simply clean. The Bhagavata's teaching is that the vow is repaired by calm return, not by shame. None of this promises an easy mind, and it does not replace a doctor or a counsellor for real distress.
