Meaning · English

Clean in body and steady in mind, with speech held in check, the student should honour fire, the sun, the teacher, cows, brahmins, elders and the gods, and at the junctures of the day murmur his prayer. Krishna says: know the teacher as me. Never slight him. Never look on him as a mere mortal or pick at his faults, for the teacher is made of all the gods.

Krishna is still describing the student's life in the teacher's house. Three words carry the verse. Sandhya means a junction, from sam and dha, to join: the meeting points of night and day, noon, and dusk. Japa is quiet repeated prayer, murmured under the breath. Acarya is the teacher, one who teaches by how he lives, from a and car, to move toward. First Krishna lists what the student honours: fire, sun, teacher, cow, learned people, elders, the gods. He is to be clean, attentive and restrained in speech, and to pray at the junctures. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, and the list belongs to that picture. What it asks of the student is plain: reverence for what feeds, lights and teaches him. Then Krishna turns to the teacher. He tells Uddhava to know the acarya as himself, never to disrespect him, never to see him as an ordinary man or hunt for faults, because the teacher holds all the gods. The commentators read this as a way of seeing, not a claim about the man's habits. Krishna gives the reason because a student who watches his teacher for flaws stops hearing him. Uddhava is asked to keep his respect whole while he learns.

A candle is lit from an older candle. Nobody stops to judge the old wax, its smoke or its crooked wick, because what matters is the flame passing across. The teacher is the older candle, and the light the student carries away is the teaching itself.

1. Choose one of the day's meeting points, dawn or dusk, and stand quietly for two minutes at the same spot, speaking nothing. 2. In those minutes, name one person who taught you something that still serves you. 3. This week, write or call that person and thank them for one specific thing they taught. 4. When you next catch yourself fixing on a flaw in someone teaching you, set it aside and listen for the lesson first.

A man stands at his window at dusk, phone in hand, thinking of the music teacher who taught him as a boy. He has not called in nine years. The teacher was short-tempered and a little vain, and that is what he remembers first. The verse works on exactly that. It asks him to set the temper beside the gift, and to let the gift speak first. He might pause at dusk, which Krishna names as a juncture worth marking, and say the teacher's name quietly. Then he might call, and say what he still plays. Ordinary experience bears out one point: a fixed pause in the day steadies a restless mind, and thanks spoken to a living teacher lands harder than thanks held back. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the old teacher kinder, does not mend a quarrel, and does not ask anyone to stay near a person who harmed them. It asks only for respect toward what was truly given.
