Morning and evening the student brings the alms he has gathered and lays them before his teacher. Whatever else the teacher permits, he uses with restraint. Wishing to hear his teacher, he attends him always, humble as a lowly man. When the teacher travels, rests, sits or stands, the student stays not far off, hands folded.
Four words carry the passage. Bhaikshya is alms food, from bhiksh, to beg: what the student collects by asking, not what he buys or cooks for himself. Shushrusha is service, and its root sense is the wish to hear, from shru, to hear. The service is a way of listening. Acharya is the teacher, from a-char, to move toward and practise: one who teaches by how he lives. Anjali is the folded-hands gesture, the body saying that it is receiving. Krishna tells Uddhava what the student does each day. Morning and evening he brings his alms and gives them to the teacher first. Anything else the teacher allows him, he takes with restraint. He serves with a lowly bearing, and stays near through the teacher's journeys, rest, sitting and standing, hands folded. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, and it is described here as that. Krishna teaches it inside his account of the stages of life, where the first stage is learning. The question underneath is how knowledge passes from one person to another. The answer given is closeness, humility and small daily service, because a student who stands far off, proud and full of his own wants, hears little. Sridhara Svami, in the Bhavartha Dipika, takes these lines as the duties of the student stage. What they ask of a listener is the habit of putting a teacher's needs before one's own appetite, and of staying near enough to learn.
A candle is lit from another candle. The unlit wick has to be brought close and held still, and it must lean toward the flame. Far away, it stays dark however fine the wax. The student's nearness and folded hands are that leaning toward the one who already burns.
1. Tomorrow morning, bring a cup of tea or water to an older person at home or at work, before you take anything for yourself. 2. Later in the day, sit near that person for ten minutes while they speak. Put your phone out of reach. 3. Notice how much you hear when you are close and quiet, and how it differs from half-listening.
An apprentice electrician, nineteen, carries the senior man's toolbag up three flights of stairs at dusk. He is tired and a little resentful, and he wants to be shown the real work, not asked to carry things. In the verse, the carrying is part of the teaching. Staying near means he watches how the senior man tests a wire before touching it, hears what he mutters to himself, and sees what he does when a job goes wrong. He also learns to wait, and to take a share only when it is offered, which is the restraint Krishna describes. Ordinary experience confirms that skill is often caught by being beside someone more than by being told, and that attention is hard to give while one is thinking of oneself. The verse promises nothing about the electrician's wages or whether his senior is a good man. It does not say that every teacher deserves this service. It describes the posture Krishna teaches for one who wants to learn from someone who knows.
