Meaning · English

Living in the teacher's house in this way, free of indulgence, he should stay until his learning is complete, holding his vow unbroken. If he hopes to rise to the world of the Vedas, the realm of Brahma, he should give his body over to the teacher for the sake of study, keeping his great vow.

Krishna is still describing the student's life to Uddhava. The key words come first. Bhoga is enjoyment, from bhuj, to eat or taste; the student stays vivarjita, set apart from it. Vrata is a vow, from a root meaning to bind oneself by choice. Akhandita means unbroken, not cut into pieces. Svadhyaya is study, literally going over one's own text again and again. Now the clauses. The student lives at the teacher's house and leaves pleasures aside. He stays as long as learning takes, not a day less. His vow is held whole, without gaps. Then Krishna adds a second thought. If the student wants the highest aim the Vedas name, the realm of Brahma, he hands his body to the teacher for study. The commentators read this as total service and discipline, offered for the sake of learning. Why teach it here? Uddhava asked for a way of life, and Krishna begins where life begins: with learning, which needs a settled place, a fixed length and a steady will. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, not a rule laid on today's readers. What still speaks is plain. Finish what you begin, set aside the pull of the moment while you learn, and give the work your whole body and time, not scraps of them.

A potter's wheel keeps its pace until the pot is shaped. Lift the hands halfway through and the clay sags and has to be rebuilt. The unbroken vow is the steady turning, and finished learning is the pot that holds water.

1. Pick one thing you are learning now, a language, a trade, a recipe, a prayer. 2. Choose a fixed daily hour for it this week and keep it, even for only twenty minutes, in the same place. 3. During that hour, put your phone in another room. 4. Notice the moment you want to stop early. Stay five minutes more, then close the book. 5. On the last evening, note what stayed with you from days you almost skipped.

A nineteen-year-old apprentice electrician stands outside the workshop on a Friday evening. A friend has offered him paid work starting Monday, and his certificate is still two months away. Money is tight at home, and the offer is real. The teaching would slow him down in steps. First it asks what the learning is for, and the answer is the full skill, not the start of it. Second, it asks him to see that the pull toward easy money and a free weekend is exactly the indulgence Krishna tells the student to set aside while he learns. Third, it asks whether he can keep his vow whole, since a half-finished training leaves gaps that show up later, usually at the worst moment. Ordinary experience bears this out: skills learned in pieces tend to fail where the pieces are missing. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the rent smaller, and it does not say every offer must be refused. A family in real need may weigh things differently, and a sound teacher would understand that. What it gives him is a clear question to ask before he decides.
