In fire, in the teacher, in the self, and in every living being, he should worship Me, the Supreme, with a mind that does not divide, shining with the brilliance of sacred learning and free of stain. One who is not a householder should keep far away from looking at women, touching, talking, playing and the like, and from creatures joined in union.
Three words carry the first half. Aprithak-dhi is an undivided mind: prithak means apart, so it is a seeing that does not split the world into the holy and the ordinary. Brahma-varchas is the glow of sacred learning, the look of a person who has studied and lived by what he studied. Akalmasha is without stain, a mind with no grime on it. Krishna tells Uddhava that the student worships Him in the sacrificial fire, in the teacher, in his own self and in every being, and that it is one worship, not four. The glow and the clean mind come from keeping that single sight. The second half says what scatters it. For one who is not a householder, which here means the student and others living the celibate stages, Krishna names looking, touching, talking and playful company with women, and the sight of creatures paired in union. The advice is to keep away from these from the start, before the pull begins. It is a rule about the stage of life, and the Bhagavata gives it in the setting of its own age's order of society. The householder is outside it. Krishna gives it because Uddhava asked for the whole way of living, and attention that has to stay on one thing needs protection while it is young.
A man carries a lit candle across a windy courtyard. He cups his hand round it and keeps to the wall, not because the wind is wicked but because the flame is small. The flame is the single steady sight of the Lord in everything. The cupped hand and the wall are the distance kept from whatever would scatter it.
1. Tonight, before a meal, look at the food, the pot and the person who cooked it for ten quiet seconds, and treat them as one thing deserving thanks. 2. Tomorrow, greet one elder or teacher by stopping what you are doing and facing them fully. 3. For one evening, name the one habit that most pulls your attention apart, such as a feed, a chat or a corridor of noise, and keep a short distance from it before it starts, not after.
A nineteen-year-old in a hostel has an exam in the morning. Down the corridor his friends are laughing, his phone lights up every few minutes, and he has read the same page four times. The verse would first ask him to name what is pulling at him, then to stay out of its reach from the start, since keeping away at the beginning is easier than resisting in the middle. He closes the door, puts the phone in another room, and returns to the page as work given to his teacher and to his own future self. Ordinary experience confirms that attention is easier to protect before temptation arrives than after. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the exam will go well or that longing will vanish. It also speaks to one stage of life, and it is no rule for everyone: the Bhagavata itself leaves the householder outside this restraint.
