Cleanliness, rinsing the mouth, bathing, prayer at the twilight hours, uprightness, visits to holy places, quiet repetition of the Name, keeping from what may not be touched, eaten, or spoken with: this discipline, delight of the Kuru line, is laid on every stage of life. And beyond it: seeing me in all beings, and holding mind, speech and body in check.

Krishna gives Uddhava a short list of daily habits. He says they belong to every stage of life, not to the student alone. Three words carry it. Shauca is cleanness, of body, food and surroundings. Japa is quiet repetition of a holy name, said softly and often. Samyama is restraint, from a root meaning to hold together: mind, speech and body gathered, not scattered. The list runs from washing and rinsing the mouth to bathing, prayer at dawn and dusk, honest straightness of dealing, and visits to holy places. The last three items are the Bhagavata's rules of avoidance: what is not to be touched, eaten or spoken with. Those reflect the society of its age and its ideas of purity by birth. They are not a rule for today. What still speaks is the rest: a clean body, a daily rhythm, a plain tongue. Krishna then says what the list is for. Holding mind, speech and body in check goes with seeing him in all beings. So restraint is meant to make a person gentle toward everyone, not to set them apart. The commentators read the last line as the aim of the whole list. Krishna asks Uddhava for a life where small daily habits and regard for every creature support each other.

A lamp stands on a shelf. Each evening someone wipes the soot from its glass chimney, so the flame shows bright into the room. The daily habits are that wiping. Regard for every being is the flame the clean glass lets through.

1. Before your next meal, wash your hands, face and feet slowly, with no phone in reach. 2. At dawn or dusk, sit for two minutes and say one name of God, or one line you love, softly and repeatedly. 3. For one day, pick one person and speak to them without a sharp or careless word. Notice when one rises, and let it pass unsaid.

A young mother stands in the kitchen at six in the morning. The toddler is crying, her mother-in-law has said something pointed, and a sharp reply is already forming. Here is what the verse would change, step by step. She stops and washes her face with cold water. She takes a few slow breaths and says a short name under her own breath. She holds her tongue for the length of one sentence, then answers plainly. The child is still crying and the remark still stings, but the reply that leaves her is smaller and cleaner. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, and that a fixed small routine gives a tired person something steady to lean on. Handwashing and clean food do protect health, and doctors say so. The old rules about who may be touched have no health basis, though. Infection travels through germs and illness, not through birth. The verse does not promise the morning will turn easy. It does not remove tension in a household or replace medical care when someone is ill.
