So the student who has kept the great vow, blazing like fire, devoted to me, his past actions burned away by fierce austerity and himself spotless, comes to the time when he wants to enter the next stage. He has learned the sacred texts as far as he sought to know them. He gives the teacher his gift, and with the teacher's leave he takes the closing bath.

Three words carry the verse. Brahmacarya, the student's vow, is called here the great vow: a long discipline of restraint, study and service to a teacher. Karmashaya is the store of old actions and their pull, the leftover habits and cravings that steer a person. Krishna says austerity has burned it, as fire burns seed so it cannot sprout. Dakshina is the teacher's gift, given at the end of study. The plain sense, clause by clause: Krishna describes a student who has stayed with the vow so faithfully that he glows like fire. He is Krishna's devotee, and his austerity has left him clean. When he wants to enter the next stage, he first finishes what he came to learn. He then pays the teacher, and bathes only after the teacher agrees. The commentators take this bath as the rite that closes studenthood. The Bhagavata is describing the society of its own age, with its stages and ranks of birth. It is not a rule for today. What still speaks is the order of the leaving: finish the learning, thank the teacher, ask permission, and only then move on. Krishna gives this to Uddhava while explaining how each stage of life is to be passed through.

A clay pot goes into the potter's kiln soft, and the fire hardens it so that rain no longer melts it. It comes out only when the potter says so. The student is the pot, austerity is the kiln, and the teacher's leave is the potter opening the door.

1. Think of one person who taught you something real, a teacher, relative or senior colleague. 2. Today, send or say a plain thanks naming one thing they gave you. 3. If you can, add a small gift of your own making, such as a note, a meal or an hour of help. 4. Before you next leave a course, job or task, ask whoever guided you if it is finished well, and notice how it feels to leave with their blessing.

A woman has taught tabla to children in her lane for thirty years. On the last day of the course, a boy of sixteen arrives with a bag of oranges and does not know what to say. Everyone knows the usual way: collect the certificate, wave, and go. The verse offers a slower order. He plays what he has learned, as far as he sought it. He hands over the gift. He asks if he may go on, and he waits for her yes. The oranges are small, but they tell the teacher her years were seen. The asking turns an exit into a closing, and he leaves with something settled instead of something dropped. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: endings done carelessly tend to leave a loose thread, and a thank-you given in person is remembered by both people. The verse does not promise that the next stage will be easy, or that the teacher will say yes. It does not say that the burning of old actions is something a person can measure. That is the text's own teaching about austerity and karma, offered as it is.
