The best of the twice-born may settle in a house, or in the forest, or go forth as a wanderer. If he is devoted to Me, he goes from one stage of life to the next and does not act otherwise. One who wants a household should marry a wife like himself, free from blame, younger in age and of the same class, taking each step in due order.
Krishna tells Uddhava that a person has three open doors after the student years: a house, the forest, or the wanderer's road. Three words carry the verse. Ashrama is a stage of life, from a root meaning to toil, so it is a place where effort is made. Pravraja is going forth, from vraj, to walk. Sadrisha means matching, of like kind. The bharya, the wife, is literally she who is supported, from bhr, to bear. Krishna says the devoted person moves from stage to stage in order and does not jump. A man who wants a household should marry a wife who matches him, whose conduct no one can fault, who is younger, and who is of his own varna. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age. It is not a rule for today. What still speaks is the pairing of like with like, which the commentators read as a match in character and habits, and the care in choosing. Krishna says this now because Uddhava needs to know how a life is laid out. Each stage has its own work, and each is meant to prepare the next. The text asks the listener to know which stage he is in and to do that stage's work fully before moving on.
Picture someone crossing a stream on stepping stones. They stand firmly on one stone, find the next, and only then lift the back foot. Leaping ahead or lingering too long both end in the water. The stones are the stages of life, and the firm footing is doing each stage's work in order.
1. Tonight, take five minutes and name the stage of life you are in now, in plain words: for example, raising children, caring for a parent, or starting work. 2. Write down the three duties that stage asks of you most. 3. Pick one thing from an earlier stage that you still hold onto, such as an old habit, role or worry, and set it aside this week. 4. Notice how the day feels with your attention on the present stage only.
A woman of fifty-eight, a retired teacher, stands in her daughter's emptied room, folding a blanket she has folded for twenty years. She still plans the week around meals and school runs that no longer exist. Krishna's teaching asks one question of her: which stage is this? The old duties have finished, and the new ones are not yet chosen. She can ask what her days are for now, and she can put the blanket away without feeling she has lost her place. Ordinary experience confirms that people who keep living in a role that has ended often feel restless and unsettled. The advice to marry a partner who matches in character fits what a family doctor sees: shared habits, values and respect make a household steadier. Today's understanding does not hold that a spouse must be younger or of a particular birth-rank for a marriage to do well. The teaching does not promise that the empty room will stop hurting, or that a good match will spare a marriage its hard years.
