Worship, study and giving belong to all the twice-born. Accepting gifts, teaching, and conducting sacrifice for others belong to the brahmana alone. Yet seeing that accepting gifts drains austerity, radiance and good name, he should live by the other two, teaching and officiating. And if he finds fault in those as well, let him live by gleaning fallen grain.
Krishna starts with a list. Ijya is worship by offering, adhyayana is study, and dana is giving. These three belong to all the twice-born, the three upper orders, so called for the second birth of initiation. Three more, Krishna tells Uddhava, belong to the brahmana alone: pratigraha, accepting gifts; teaching; and officiating at others' sacrifices. Then he weighs them. Accepting gifts, he says, carries a cost. It wears down tapas, the heat of discipline; tejas, inner radiance; and yashas, good name. So the brahmana should earn his bread by teaching and officiating. If he sees fault even in those, he can live by gleaning grain left in harvested fields. The commentators read the other two as teaching and officiating. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, not a rule for today. The teaching answers a plain question: how does a householder with little to his name eat without losing what makes his life worth living? Krishna gives a ladder of livelihood, from more entangled to freest. What still speaks is the asking: what does each kind of income cost, and how little can one take and still be whole?
A borrowed umbrella keeps you dry, but you must walk where its owner walks and hand it back on request. Your own umbrella goes anywhere. Each gift taken is a little like the borrowed one: it shelters, and it quietly binds.
1. Today, notice one thing you accept without paying: a lift, a treat, a favour. Ask whether it came with any expectation, spoken or not. 2. Before accepting the next favour this week, ask whether a plainer way of your own would do. 3. Give something small today, such as ten minutes of help or a share of your food, and ask nothing back. Notice how it sits compared with receiving.
A schoolteacher is handed an expensive gift by a parent, three days before marks are due. She holds the box and feels a small pull she cannot quite name. The teaching would have her read that pull as a cost, not a nicety. First she sees that the gift is not free: it asks for goodwill, and goodwill leans on judgment. Second, she asks whether her honest pay and her own work are enough, as the text prefers a livelihood that leaves a person unbeholden. Third, she can thank the parent warmly and decline, or say the gift must wait until marks are final. Ordinary experience confirms the point: people feel they owe something to those who have given to them, even when no one says so. The limit is plain. The teaching does not say every gift is corrupt, and it does not settle what a family with real need should do when help is offered. It does not pay the rent either. It asks only that the price of taking be counted.
