Meaning · English

Your bangles dance as you draw the bow; O maiden, golden arrows from your quiver strike down shouting champions; O maiden, the four-part army fills the field like a stage. Victory, slayer of Mahisha.

The scene is a battlefield, but the poet's eye goes to small things. As she draws and releases the bow, the bangles on her arms keep moving, almost dancing. Her quiver holds arrows tinged gold and tawny, and they bring down the loudest of the enemy's champions. The field itself is called a stage, crowded with the four parts of an old army: elephants, chariots, horses and foot soldiers, in many colors and full of noise. The refrain closes it: victory to the slayer of Mahisha.

Picture a woman at a busy roadside stall, working fast through a long queue. Her glass bangles chime with every quick movement, steady and light, while the street roars around her. The chime tells you she is not straining. That is the bangles at the bow: in the thick of the clamor, her movement stays easy enough to ring.
