Meaning · English

You delight in heaven's dancers, their tapping steps and gestures, in songs keeping playful time, in the drum's deep thunder. Victory to you, Mahisha's slayer, lovely-haired mountain daughter.

She loves a performance. The women of heaven dance for her, beating out steps with their feet and acting out stories with their hands and faces. She enjoys songs played inside a rhythmic cycle, where the fun lies in how the beat is kept and teased. Above all she enjoys the steady, deep boom of the two-headed drum. The odd syllables in the lines are not words at all. They are the sounds dancers and drummers speak aloud to count the beat, set right into the hymn.

Picture an aunt at a wedding, sitting politely with her tea, when the drummer starts up. Within a few beats her foot is tapping and her shoulders are moving, and she is grinning. That is the goddess here. She is not a stern figure watching from a distance. When the music begins, she is the one enjoying it most.
