Meaning · English

He is the swan in the bright heaven, the Vasu in the sky, the priest at the altar, the guest in the house. He dwells in people, in the gods, in truth, in space. Born of water, cattle, truth and mountain, he is the true, the vast.

Yama is naming where Brahman, the one reality behind everything, is found. The list moves through four regions: sky, air, fire, earth. Then people, gods, and the order of truth. Then living things born of water, of earth, of the sacrifice, of mountains. Three words carry it. Sad means dwelling or sitting in, and it repeats through the verse, so Brahman is shown seated in every place. Ja means born of, so Brahman appears in every kind of birth. Rita means the true order, the way things hold together. Brahman is that order, and it is called the true and the vast. Yama answers Nachiketas by refusing to give one address. Whatever you point to, the same reality is there. Shankara reads the swan, the Vasu, the priest and the guest as names of the sun, air, fire and the soma vessel's guest, all of them forms of the one Self, who is present in the whole world as its inner nature. The verse also asks the listener to stop looking for the Self in one far place. It is in the guest at the door, as Nachiketas himself was.

Think of one voice heard in a crowded hall. It comes from the front, the back, the balcony and the doorway, because every speaker in the room carries it. The places are many. The voice is single. So the verse names one reality sounding through sky, fire, guest, mountain and water.

1. Choose one ordinary hour today, such as a walk or a meal. 2. Pick three things you meet: a person, a patch of sky, a flame or water. Look at each for ten seconds. 3. With each, say quietly: the same reality is here too. 4. When someone arrives at your door or table today, welcome them first, before anything else. Notice how that feels.

A man comes home from a long shift and finds his sister's husband at the door, unannounced, with a bag. He is tired and he wants the evening to himself. The first pull is irritation, and he feels it tighten his jaw. Yama's words would change the moment in small steps. He would remember that the Self sits in the guest as surely as in the sky. He would let his shoulders drop, take the bag, and put water on to boil. Then he would ask one real question and listen to the answer. Ordinary experience confirms that how we receive a person changes the whole evening, for both. The verse does not promise the man will feel warm, or that the visit will be easy. It does not settle the quarrel that may be coming, and it does not replace honest talk about how long the guest can stay. It gives him a reason to open the door fully, and the rest still has to be lived.
