Even the Wise Get Dragged

Bhagavad Gita 2.60

Meaning · English

Even for a person of discrimination, Arjun, son of Kunti, while practicing self-control, the turbulent senses carry away the mind by force.

Three words carry it. Indriya are the senses: the ways of taking in the world, with the pull that goes with each. Vipashchit is a person who sees clearly and can tell what helps from what merely pleases. Pramathin means churning, an agitation that shakes a thing loose from its footing. Krishna tells Arjuna that even such a person, and even while actively practicing restraint, can find the mind hauled off. The word is forcibly. The mind does not drift away; it is seized. Krishna says this because the tortoise drawing in its limbs, just before, can sound easy. He names the difficulty so Arjuna does not mistake understanding for mastery. Knowing better, and trying, does not make the pull gentle. What he asks of the listener is to treat the senses as strong and to expect the struggle, without being shocked or ashamed when the mind is carried off. Shankara reads the verse as a warning that restraint must be kept up with constant care. Ramanuja reads it as leading into the next verse, where the remedy is fixing the mind on Krishna. Madhva stresses that the seeker's own effort needs the Lord's grace.

A man walks three eager dogs, each straining toward a different smell. He has done it for years and knows the route, yet one sudden lunge yanks his arm sideways. The dogs are the senses, the arm is the mind, and the walker's experience does not stop the first hard pull.

1. Pick one small pull you know well, such as your phone after a meal or a snack at four o'clock. 2. Today, when it comes, name it silently: "the pull is here." Do not argue with it yet. 3. Wait one full minute before acting, and notice where you feel it, in the hands, the stomach or the eyes. 4. That evening, note in one line whether the pull was stronger or weaker than you expected.

Six weeks after his last cigarette, a man stands at a cousin's wedding while the other men drift outside to smoke. He knows exactly why he quit. The craving rises anyway, quick and physical, before any argument forms. The verse speaks to that moment. It says the wise and the practicing are both pulled, so the pull is not proof that he failed or that his reasons were weak. He can see it as the force Krishna describes, not as a verdict on himself. Seeing it that way, he can stay near the music, hold a glass of water, and let the wave pass without bargaining with it. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness and a crowd make restraint harder. The verse does not promise the pull will vanish, and it does not replace a doctor's help for a dependence that needs treatment.
