Meaning · English

The seer is only seeing, nothing added. Though pure, it watches by way of the ideas that rise in the mind.

Three terms carry this sutra. Drashta is the seer, from the root drish, to see. Drishimatra is drishi, sight, with matra, only: sight and nothing more. Pratyaya is what is presented to the mind, a thought, an impression, an idea. Anupashya is seeing along with, following what appears. Patanjali says the seer is nothing but seeing. It is not a thinker or a feeler. It is pure, so it has no stain of its own. Yet it looks only by way of the mind's ideas. Every word is accounted for: what sees, what it is made of, its purity, and the channel it sees through. Why say this here? The sutras just before describe the seen: its three qualities, its layers, its purpose. The question that follows is who stands on the other side of it. For a reading on suffering, the sutra marks where to look. Pain shows up in the ideas the mind presents. The seer who watches them is a separate thing, and the sutra calls it pure. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes the seer to be the power of awareness alone, unchanging, and seeing through the mind's ideas. The commentators differ in how they explain the link between seer and idea, but they agree that the seer itself is not altered.

A man stands at a window of stained glass and sees the street in red and blue. The glass colours everything he sees. His eye stays clear the whole time. The seer is the eye, the mind's ideas are the coloured glass, and the sutra says the seeing is real while the tint belongs to the glass.

1. Pick one ordinary moment today, such as waiting for a kettle or a bus, and stay in it for two minutes. 2. When a worry or a sour thought comes up, say silently, "an idea is showing." Say it once and leave it. 3. Notice that something is aware of the idea. Do not describe that something. Just notice it is there. 4. Do this once in the morning and once in the evening for a week.
