Seen For Another's Sake
Yoga Sutras 2.21
Meaning · English
The seen has its being only for the sake of that one, the Seer. Its whole nature is to serve the Seer's seeing.
Three words carry the sutra. Drishya is the seen, everything that can be an object of awareness: body, senses, thoughts, the world. Atma here means its own self, its inner nature or essence. Tad-artha means for the sake of that, for that one's purpose. The that is the Seer, the drashta named in 2.20. Taken whole: the very being of the seen is to serve the Seer. It has no purpose of its own. Patanjali says this because the reading so far asks where suffering comes from. If the seen existed for itself, nothing could be done about it. Because it exists for the Seer's sake, it is there to be known, and suffering begins when the Seer takes it as its own self. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the purpose as twofold: experience of the seen, and release from it. Both are what the seen is for. The commentators agree that the seen is not a rival to the Seer but its instrument, though they differ on how far the Seer is changed by using it.
A lamp stands on a table at dusk. The lamp has no use except that someone can read, find a cup, see a face. Light is for the one who sees by it. The seen is like that: all of it is there so that seeing can happen.
1. Once today, pick an ordinary object near you, a cup, a window, your own hand. 2. Look at it for half a minute and notice that it is there to be known, and that something in you is doing the knowing. 3. When a worry or an irritation arises later, pause for one breath and ask: who is aware of this? 4. Note, without arguing, whether the worry is the one aware or the thing being seen.
