One With No Second

Meaning · English
My dear, at the start all this was only Being, one, with nothing beside it. Some say it was Non-being, alone, and Being came out of it.
Being means simply what is: the plain fact that something exists. Before the world was full of separate things, the father says, there was only that. 'One' means it had no parts inside it. 'With nothing beside it' means there was no second thing outside it, nothing for it to come from or lean on. Then he reports another opinion. Some hold that the start was nothing at all, and that what exists grew out of that emptiness.
A baker's counter holds one ball of dough before the work starts. Later there will be rolls, flatbreads and a braided loaf, but each is cut from that same ball; no second bag of flour is ever opened. The single starting dough is Being, and the many loaves are the world that later takes shape from it.
