The space in the heart is as wide as the space outside. Earth and sky, fire, wind, sun, moon, lightning, stars, what one has and lacks: all rest in it.
The teacher has pointed to a small space in the heart. Now he says it is not small at all. Ākāśa means space, the open room in which anything can exist. The space inside is as large as the space that holds the world. Everything that sky contains, earth and heaven, fire and wind, sun and moon, lightning and stars, is gathered there too. Even what a person has and what they do not have is held in it. Nothing is left outside.
Hold a pocket mirror up to an open window. In a few inches of glass you see the whole sky, the clouds, the rooftops, the glare of the sun. The glass fits in a palm, yet nothing in that view is missing. The heart's space works the same way: tiny in the body, yet holding the whole world.

हृदय के भीतर का आकाश उतना ही विशाल है जितना बाहर का आकाश। धरती और आकाश, अग्नि, वायु, सूर्य, चंद्रमा, बिजली, तारे, जो कुछ मनुष्य के पास है और जो नहीं है: सब उसी में टिके हैं।
गुरु ने हृदय के भीतर एक छोटे-से आकाश की ओर संकेत किया है। अब वे कहते हैं कि वह ज़रा भी छोटा नहीं है। आकाश का अर्थ है अवकाश, वह खुली जगह जिसमें कुछ भी रह सकता है। भीतर का आकाश उतना ही बड़ा है जितना वह आकाश जो संसार को धारण करता है। आकाश में जो कुछ समाया है, धरती और स्वर्ग, अग्नि और वायु, सूर्य और चंद्रमा, बिजली और तारे, वह सब वहाँ भी एकत्र है। मनुष्य के पास जो है और जो नहीं है, वह भी उसी में समाया है। कुछ भी बाहर नहीं छूटता।
जेब का एक छोटा दर्पण किसी खुली खिड़की की ओर उठाकर देखिए। कुछ इंच के काँच में आपको पूरा आकाश दिखता है, बादल, छतें, सूरज की चकाचौंध। काँच हथेली में समा जाता है, फिर भी उस दृश्य में कुछ भी छूटता नहीं। हृदय का आकाश भी इसी प्रकार है: शरीर में बहुत छोटा, फिर भी पूरे संसार को समेटे हुए।
