Her Face and Eyes

Meaning · English
Your loveliness charms good hearts like flowers; your face is the night's moon; your glances dart like bees. Victory, slayer of Mahisha, mountain's daughter with lovely braided hair.
The lines are built on sound. One word is repeated again and again, and each time it bends to a new sense: flowers, then good-hearted people, then the charm both find in her. The same game follows with night and the moon, the maker of night, which frames her face. Then with bees: her eyes move the way bees move among blossoms, quick and bright. The refrain closes it, hailing the goddess who struck down the buffalo demon, the mountain's daughter with her lovely braided hair.
Picture someone tapping the same piano key over and over, softer, harder, longer, shorter. It is one note, yet it becomes a small tune. The poet does this with words. One word, struck again and again, keeps landing on a new sense, so her beauty is heard as much as understood.
