Meaning · English
You delight in the great battle among champion wrestlers; hill women in creepers and jasmine, amid chirping crickets, crowd round you; red shoots and white blossoms grace you. Victory, mountain's daughter, slayer of Mahisha.
The goddess is pictured among people, not on a throne. First she enjoys a great battle, and the fighters around her are named with the word for wrestlers, champions matching their strength. So the war is pictured as a wrestling bout. Next she is surrounded by women from forest hamlets, the hill tribes, who have woven garlands of creepers and jasmine, while crickets chirp. Last, she herself is lovely with tender red leaves and white flowers just opening. The refrain closes it: victory to her, the mountain's daughter.
Picture a village fair after harvest. Young women grapple in a dusty ring, neighbours crowd close with strings of flowers, and the guest of honour wears jasmine and fresh green leaves in her hair. The hymn sets that same noise and colour around her: strength, country people and spring growth, all close at hand.
