Meaning · English

Your stride is the royal elephant's, heavy and unstoppable; you are the ocean-king's daughter, moonlike, jewel of three worlds; love's daughter, who charms longing hearts. Victory, Mahisha-slayer, lovely-haired mountain's daughter.

The hymn piles up titles in a single breath. First, her walk is like the lead elephant in season, temples streaming, heavy and unstoppable. It is power that does not hurry. Then she is the ocean-king's daughter, with a beauty like the moon, the jewel hung over all three worlds. Then she is daughter of the king of love, the one who stirs the hearts of women who long. The refrain still calls her the mountain's daughter. Each father claims her for a different realm.

At a wedding, every relative claims the bride. One aunt says she has her grandmother's laugh. An uncle says she walks just like her father. A neighbor says she grew up in their courtyard. None of them is wrong. Ocean, love and mountain call her their daughter the same way: she belongs wholly to each.
