Meaning · English

Your flute outsings the cuckoo, who hushes in shame. Hill-folk sing through your mountain groves; your own virtues play as hunter-women. Victory, slayer of Mahisha, lovely-haired mountain daughter.

There are three scenes. First, she plays a flute so sweetly that the cuckoo, India's standard for a lovely voice, goes quiet and is embarrassed. Second, the Pulindas, a hill tribe, gather around her. Their singing fills the mountain thickets where she wanders and colors them with delight. Third, the Shabaris, women of a hunting people, crowd her playground, and the line says they are her own good qualities taking form. Her goodness becomes her company. The refrain closes as always: victory to the slayer of the buffalo-demon, lovely-haired daughter of the mountain.

Picture a grandmother in a crowded kitchen at a holiday meal. One grandchild has her laugh, another rolls dough the way she does, a third hums her songs. Look closely and the whole busy room is her, spread out across many faces. The hunter-women around the goddess are like that: her own goodness, given bodies and voices.
