Meaning · English
Your yellow waist-silk outshines the moon; your toenails gleam like moons, lit by jewels of bowing gods and demons; your full breasts, like an elephant's frontal globes, outdo the peak of the golden mountain. Victory to you, slayer of Mahisha, lovely-haired daughter of the mountain.
Three pictures: two brighter than the moon, and one grander than the golden mountain. The yellow silk at her waist throws off so many shifting colours that moonlight looks plain beside it. Her toenails are small moons too. Gods and demons bow so low before her that the gems in their crowns shine onto her feet. Even old enemies kneel together there. Then the hymn praises her bosom, full like an elephant's temple-globes, surpassing the peak of the golden mountain. The refrain names her once more as Mahisha's slayer, with lovely hair.
At a wedding, a line of relatives stoops to touch a grandmother's feet. Their earrings, sequins and rings catch the hall lights, and for a moment her feet are flecked with sparkle. That shine is not hers. It comes from the people bowing. Her toenails glow the same way, lit by the crowns of those who kneel.
