Meaning · English
Praised by the hero who conquered the thousand-handed one, mother of the son who freed the gods from Taraka, glad in Suratha's and Samadhi's shared devotion: victory, slayer of Mahisha, mountain's daughter.
Each line praises her through someone else. The first line repeats one phrase three times, the thousand-handed one, and she is praised by the hero who conquered him. The second line also turns on a repeated word, this one meaning rescuer. She is mother of the son who rescued the gods in their war with the demon Taraka. The third line names two worshippers, a king called Suratha and a merchant called Samadhi. Their devotion was equal in depth, and she delights in it.
Clap once inside a stone stairwell and the sound comes back three or four times, each echo landing on top of the last. The first line works the same way. The same few syllables keep returning until a single act of praise sounds like a crowd of thousands, every hand joining the one before.
