Meaning · English

Whoever serves your lotus feet daily, home of mercy, how could he not become Lakshmi's home? Your feet are the highest place; dwelling on that, what do I lack?

The hymn plays on a name. She is called Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune who sits in a lotus, and also the home of mercy. Whoever serves her feet every day, it says, cannot help becoming a home for that same fortune. Then the singer turns to himself. Her feet are the highest place there is. Someone who keeps turning that over in the mind has nothing left to ask for. The first half makes a promise about others. The second half is already content.

Picture a bird feeder that someone fills every morning without fail. Within a season the birds are nesting in the hedge beside it. Nobody called them; they came because the seed was always there. The daily service is the filling of the feeder, and fortune is the birds that settle near the person who keeps returning.
