Meaning · English
Who sprinkles your hall of virtues with golden river water, does he not taste the joy of embracing Shachi's pitcher-like breasts? Your feet, home of Speech, where gods bow, are my refuge. Victory, mountain's daughter.
The first half is a promise about a small act of worship. Someone washes her shrine, the floor where her good qualities are on show, with water that shines like gold. Would that person not taste the happiness Indra knows in embracing his queen Shachi, her breasts full as water-pots? Indra is king of the gods, so the reward named is the best the heavens hold. The second half turns personal. The singer chooses her feet as his refuge. He calls them auspicious, the place where Speech lives and where the gods come bowing.
Picture a volunteer who comes early to rinse the temple steps with a bucket before anyone arrives. It is plain work, bare feet on wet stone. The hymn sets that bucket of water against a king's pleasures in heaven. The smallest task done in her house is weighed against the largest reward the gods know.
