Meaning · English

Can one devoted to your spotless moon-face, a whole cluster of pure moons, be drawn away by the moon-faced women of Indra's city? You whose wealth is Shiva's name, what can your grace not do?

Two kinds of moon are set side by side. Indra's city is the heaven of the gods, and its women are praised for faces like the moon. Her face is called a cluster of spotless moons, moons with no mark on them. Can one who is devoted to that face be drawn away by the heavenly beauties? The question expects the answer no. Then the poet speaks in his own voice. She is the one whose wealth is Shiva's name, and to his mind there is nothing her kindness cannot bring about.

Street lamps switched on at dusk look bright, until the sun comes up and nobody glances at them anymore. They have not gone dark. They simply no longer catch the eye. The moon-faced women of Indra's city are the lamps, and her face turned kindly toward someone is the morning.
